Ultra-Luxury Hotel Opens in Chicago in the World’s Tallest Building Designed by a Woman

It’s an architectural wonder 101 stories high in Chicago’s Lakeshore East neighborhood that transforms the Windy City’s skyline. Eleven of those floors make up the newly-opened, ultra-luxury hotel St. Regis Chicago.

Designed by the world-renowned architecture and urban design practice led by Jeanne Gang, the tower breaks new ground as the tallest building in the world designed by a female architect.

The tower’s crystalline form was inspired by nature with its facets of a shimmering gem and its gradient of green-blue glass that reflects the colors of Lake Michigan and the Chicago River.

The St. Regis hotel captures that design innovation and brings its own glamorous spirit and celebrated rituals to its first location in the U.S. Midwest. It features a unique and distinctive design composed of an interconnected series of stacked, frustum-shapes that move rhythmically in and out of plane and extend to various heights.

159 luxuriously-appointed guestrooms and 33 exquisite suites offer unparalleled 360-degree views of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. Guests will discover St. Regis' legendary butler service and traditional daily champagne sabre ceremonies to start an evening of cocktails; an expansive spa; over 11,000 sq. ft. of event and meeting space; and world-class dining.

Throughout the hotel’s public areas, spa, and Presidential Suite, metallic materials and colors, such as copper and rust, are interwoven with geometric, angular lines, offering a nod to The Great Chicago Fire and the city’s geographic interconnectivity of waterways, buildings, and green spaces.

Guestrooms offer a place of respite and rejuvenation. A palette of natural stone and wood finishes create a connection to nature, juxtaposing its minimalistic beauty against an urban backdrop of skyline views.

At Miru, an all-day dining venue on the 11^th floor, the menu highlights Japanese small plates, sushi, and sashimi complemented by a selection of steak and seafood. Why Belfast is the Best Place to Experience the Legend of the Titanic

Wait, Belfast? Part of the legend of the Titanic? The most famously-doomed passenger ship tale of all time? Wasn’t she a British ship, sailing from Southampton to New York, that struck an iceberg and capsized over a century ago? How did Ireland play a part – and how could Belfast keep the ‘Ship of Dreams’ alive for us today?

Glad you asked.

Belfast has an integral place in Titanic lore, and is perhaps the primary destination today – with the possible exception of an undersea expedition to the final resting place of the legendary ship herself on the ocean floor in the North Atlantic – to immerse yourself in the fateful story of the Titanic.

That story ended on April 15, 1912, when over 1500 passengers and crew members of an estimated 2224 souls aboard the British luxury liner Titanic famously perished in the icy waters off the coast of Canada. The brand-new ship, the largest ship afloat at the time, was touted as ‘unsinkable,’ full of extraordinary luxuries and groundbreaking bells and whistles. The Titanic was on her inaugural voyage – carrying immigrants to the U.S. and Canada as well as a who’s who of English and American high society on board. It remains the deadliest peacetime sinking of a passenger ship.

On both sides of the Atlantic, the tragedy played out over days of sensational press. It shocked nations and rocked dynasties that lost scions of business and aristocratic heirs. The saturation media coverage cemented the Titanic’s legend and laid the foundation for generations of creative works weaving tales and amplifying the myth of the ship and the people on board.

But that story began in the shipyards of Belfast, where the Titanic was born.

And for anyone fascinated by the Titanic’s tale, Belfast carries the torch for the doomed liner, with a Belfast Titanic Society, Titanic tours, attractions, exhibitions, events and experiences, as well as three key places to relive memories of the world’s most famous passenger ship:

Titanic Belfast in the Titanic Quarter

Where shipyards once opened up onto the sea in Belfast, a large-scale waterfront regeneration project, called the Titanic Quarter in honor of the city’s most famous product, now stands. The cornerstone of the Titanic Quarter is Titanic Belfast, a visitor attraction that opened in 2012 for the 100^th anniversary of the ship’s sinking.

The Titanic Belfast stands on the site of the former Harland & Wolff shipyard where the RMS Titanic was built between 1909 and 1912.

The spectacular, avant-garde building clad in aluminum shards was meant to evoke the shape of ships’ prows and stands 126 feet high – the same height as the Titanic’s hull. But its nickname has become ‘the Iceberg’ for its resemblance to a sharp and craggy chunk of ice – recalling the cause of the Titanic’s destruction.

Inside, you’ll discover historic and state-of-the-art exhibits immersing you in the booming city of Belfast at the start of the 20^th century, original drawings, scale models, shipyard artifacts and interactive media displays recount the construction of the Titanic, including a giant scaffold and gantry and small cars taking you through a recreation of the shipyard.

You’ll progress through fascinating displays about the launch and fit-out of the ship, and you can walk across a replica of the Titanic’s wooden decks, sit on benches, and experience a computer-generated tour of the ship, from the engine room to the dining salons and even the bridge.

Further exhibits follow the maiden voyage and disastrous collision with an iceberg and the Titanic’s sinking. The iceberg is evoked by a wall of 400 replica life-jackets, on which an image of the sinking ship is projected. In a gallery devoted to the aftermath of the disaster, another emotional display: a full-size replica of one of the ship’s under-utilized lifeboats. For those with a family connection to the disaster, you can search passenger and crew lists for their names.

The final galleries allow you to explore myths, legends and pop culture that grew up around the Titanic – suitably accompanied by the famous Celine Dion song from the blockbuster film.

And you can see the Titanic as she rests now 12,000 feet below the surface of the sea, presented in collaboration with Dr. Robert Ballard, the wreck’s discoverer.

The Titanic Hotel in the Former Harland & Wolff Shipbuilders’ Headquarters

Next door to the Titanic Belfast, in the historic building where the RMS Titanic was designed, masterminded, and her construction supervised, is a half-hotel, half-museum, with an original collection of over 500 artworks, artifacts and photographs transporting the viewer back to the shipbuilder’s heyday and 'Golden Age of Ocean Travel.’

Many of the luxury Titanic Hotel’s 119 rooms have iconic views over Titanic Belfast and ‘nautical personality’ with streamlined Art Deco furniture, hanging ship’s lanterns, riveted panels and maritime artwork.

The heritage building also preserves and celebrates the restored Victorian Drawing Offices, with their three-story high barrel-vaulted ceilings. They are the only surviving examples of this type of shipyard architecture in the world (pictured, top.)

Drawing Office Two’s dramatic space was where many of the world’s most famous ocean liners, including the Titanic, were designed. It is now dedicated to drinks and dining. Villeroy & Boch tiles encircling the main bar are the same pattern as those used for the Titanic's swimming pool and First Class bathrooms. The fine, restored plasterwork in this room was also crafted by the same skilled craftsmen who worked on the great liners.

The Titanic Memorial Garden at Belfast City Hall

Funded by contributions from the public, shipyard workers and victims’ families, the Titanic Memorial in Belfast is the only memorial in the world that commemorates all of the victims of the sinking of the ship: passengers and crew alike.

It was dedicated in 1920, less than a decade after the ship’s fateful and incomplete maiden voyage, and includes an allegorical representation of the disaster in the form of a female figure depicting Fate holding a laurel wreath over the head of a drowned sailor being held above the waves by a pair of mermaids.

On the centenary of the disaster, a surrounding Titanic memorial garden was opened, and it’s the location where annual remembrance ceremonies have been held that keep the ship that sailed so majestically out of Belfast’s shipyards alive for residents and visitors to the city today.

Upgrades and Celebrations Mark the 50th Anniversary of Australia’s Architectural Icon: the Sydney Opera House

In 2023, the iconic Sydney Opera House celebrates a half-century of symbolizing not just a city, but a country and even a continent. It may even be the most famous building in the southern hemisphere.

This icon of modern design evoking giant stylized, sail-shaped shells occupies Bennelong point projecting out into Sydney Harbour. It dominates the skyline and has gripped the world’s imagination ever since its debut in 1973.

Completely unprecedented when it won the contest for a design for a performing arts center on Sydney’s waterfront, the design concept was believed by observers from the outset to represent a masterpiece and breakthrough in modern architecture.

No wonder its construction went years and over 1000 per cent over budget as the architect and builders had to invent ways to achieve the daring design. Their solutions to the challenges they faced reshaped modern architecture – and put Sydney on the world map as a cultural trend-setter, risk-taker, and innovator.

The Sydney Opera House paved the way for the immensely complex geometries of some unique styles of modern architecture. It was one of the first examples of the use of computer-aided design to formulate complex shapes represented by the stylized shells/ sails.

The shells themselves were a six-year construction problem – solved by a ‘eureka’ realization of the application of spherical geometry. It led to re-designing the sails so that, if all of the 14 shells of the Sydney Opera House were combined, they would form a perfect – and perfectly solid – sphere. Concrete ribs holding up pre-cast concrete sections could be built on site, along with concrete sections of that sphere. Those prefabricated, repetitive forms represented a breakthrough in 20^th century architecture.

They also permitted uniform tiling, and those, too, were one-of-a-kind. Inspired by Japanese ceramic bowls, the glossy tiles seem white at a distance but incorporate pale steel blue and cream tones and do not create reflective glare. Over one million custom tiles in chevron shapes and curved to conform to the spherical sections of the shells they would have to adhere to, were manufactured on site. They were even designed to be self-cleaning by rainfall to reduce maintenance.

The 22-story building’s interiors have some remarkable secrets, too. The Sydney Opera House Grand Organ, the largest mechanical tracker action organ in the world, rises almost 50 feet, weighs over 37 tonnes, and incorporates over 10,000 pipes.

When the Sydney Opera House was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the organization described it as “one of the indisputable masterpieces of human creativity, not only in the 20th century but in the history of humankind.” Experts cite unparalleled design and construction; extraordinary engineering achievements, technological innovation and its status as a world-famous icon of architecture as why a now-50-year old building still stands tall in our imaginations today.

It inspired and informed generations of architects to come. Techniques developed to make the Sydney Opera House design a reality made the works of current ‘star-chitect’ Frank Gehry and the ‘blobitecture’ style possible, along with most modern reinforced concrete structures.

A 50th Birthday Makeover and Year-Long Party

Leading up to the 2023 half-century milestone, the Sydney Opera House has undergone a $300-million decade of renewal.

Those 10,000 organ pipes have been cleaned by hand, and restorative cleaning wasn’t all that has transformed the icon of architecture.

“Long –awaited” renovations of the building’s acoustics, functionality and accessibility were delayed by the pandemic, but miraculously, the concert hall reopened just as travel resumed to Australia – on the cusp of the Sydney Opera House’s 50^th anniversary year.

Between the giddy joy of post-pandemic resumption of public musical performances and travel and a milestone in the life of a building that shaped the skyline and the national identity, celebrations at the Sydney Opera House throughout 2023 are incredible.

Major Australian and international artists will be part of a celebration of contemporary culture via more than 230 performances, events and experiences that will be presented on the Opera House’s famous sails, inside its theaters, on the Forecourt and online. Free outdoor concerts, community events, First Nations storytelling, tours, public art, exhibitions, and special resident company collaborations will encourage hundreds of thousands of people – locals and visitors from around the world – to experience the wonder of the Sydney Opera House.

Even those who have no ear for music will be enthralled by events like Vivid Sydney, an annual light, technology and creativity event running late May through mid-June. In the 50^th year of the Sydney Opera House, vibrant paintings of the natural world by acclaimed Australian artist John Olsen will illuminate those iconic sails as they act like giant, curved, harborfront projection screens during the Lighting of the Sails for Vivid Sydney.

Revamped Opera House tours will reveal unforgettable past performances and special historic moments. The tour will feature a new film in the Opera House’s purpose-built venue that boasts state-of-the-art technology including 270-degree visuals and surround sound, as well as heritage-inspired interiors.

Oceania Cruises Christens 1st New Ship in a Decade and Introduces new Wine, Spirits and Culinary Experiences

Oceania Cruises has officially welcomed the 1200-guest Oceania Vista in a glittering event in Malta. She’s the cruise line’s first new ship in more than ten years, and the first of its new, Allura-class of ships.

In a ceremony that included centuries-old blessings on the ship and the souls who will sail upon her, Italian-American chef, author, restaurateur and Emmy award-winning food personality Giada De Laurentiis christened the Vista with the traditional breaking of a bottle of champagne against the ship’s hull.

If you have sailed with Oceania before, you’ll know that the cruise line prides itself especially on its culinary experiences, making a chef the perfect godmother of the new Vista.

De Laurentiis will create two signature dishes to be served in Toscana, Oceania Cruises' authentic Italian specialty restaurant, as well as The Grand Dining Room, the luxurious grand dame of the line's culinary venues.

Those are just two of the 11 culinary venues on board the Vista – which introduces three all-new restaurants: Aquamar Kitchen, offering an array of wellness-inspired dishes with a hint of indulgence; The Bakery at Baristas, serving tempting freshly baked pastries; and a new signature restaurant, Ember.

The ship’s 11 restaurants are complemented by 8 bars, lounges and entertainment venues.

Paired with its emphasis on cuisine, Oceania elevates wine and spirits experiences fleet-wide, and on the Vista, it is also introducing The Casino Mixology Bar, a new concept for the line, focused entirely on the art of the cocktail.

Vista bar venues feature the latest cocktail-crafting trends and techniques such as flavored smoke bubbles, an extensive selection of low- and no-sugar wines, and zero-proof cocktails, plus Negronis aged in wooden barrels and specialty beverage carts like the Bubbly Bar and Ultimate Bloody Mary Bar.

In honor of the arrival of the Vista and across the entire fleet, Oceania Cruises will debut a series of rum and whisky programs in 2023. The experiences will feature a collection of The Macallan's via The Macallan Diamond Bar Cart, a flight program, chocolate pairings and more. For fans of rum, Brugal 1888 Doblemente Añejado Rum will be featured in a new Tea at Sea mixology class and a wide selection of newly crafted ice cream cocktails.

On the wine side, guests will also be able to partake in pairing experiences including a Moët & Chandon Champagne three-course pairing, sommelier-guided lunches with wine pairings, and the signature Oceania Cruises Dom Pérignon experience alongside a six-course tasting menu.

You may never want to go home! And, in fact, the Oceania Vista was designed to feel a lot like home at sea – but even better.

1200 guests stay in 600- all-veranda staterooms, and Oceania says the standard staterooms are “the most spacious” at sea at 290 square feet. There are new Concierge Level veranda staterooms for solo travelers, even. And the ship was designed for “residential-style luxury.”

There are two crew members for every three guests onboard, for elevated service levels.

Where You Can Sail on the New Vista

Following her inaugural in Malta, Vista is sailing a sold out summer season in the Mediterranean.

But you may still be able to sail on Oceania’s first Allura-class ship in her inaugural year.

In September, she will sail to Canada and New England before heading south for a series of winter itineraries exploring Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean from her homeport of Miami.

Vista's 2024 summer season will see her sail a series of Grand Voyages in the eastern Mediterranean, Aegean and Adriatic Seas, visiting an intriguing array of iconic cities and smaller boutique ports throughout Italy, Turkey, Greece and the Holy Lands.

You can also plan ahead to be one of the first guests onboard the Vista’s upcoming new sister ship, another 1,200-guest newbuild, Allura, scheduled to set sail in 2025.

One of America’s Most Famous Landmarks Celebrates 100th Anniversary

It ranks right up there with the Statue of Liberty and the Washington monument. Not only is it a world-wide symbol of the United States. It’s also the country’s most famous sign – and visual shorthand for one of America’s most universally-consumed exports: movies, as well as the West Coast city where movie-making dreams come true.

In 2023, the Hollywood sign celebrates an entire century dominating the Los Angeles skyline. That’s almost as long as Los Angeles itself has been dominating storytelling on screen.

But the origins of Hollywood sign aren’t particularly glamorous. Did you know:

The municipality of Hollywood began as a community for members of the temperance movement opposing the consumption of alcohol.

The couple who founded the town may have named it after a red-berried shrub sometimes called California holly. The municipality was founded in 1903 and merged with Los Angeles 7 years later – one year before the first film studio located there.

The sign was originally intended to promote real estate, not as a symbol of the movie capital of the world.

In 1923, the sign was erected to promote an upscale real-estate development designed to capitalize on growing interest in and success of the film industry. The first version of the sign was lit by 4000 light bulbs.

The Great Depression was the end of the Hollywoodland real estate development, and the sign was abandoned, becoming increasingly derelict until the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce came to the rescue in the mid-1940’s. In restoring the sign, they dropped the last four letters.

Since then, the Sign and the surrounding area has been protected and preserved from both developers and disrepair, defended by citizens and celebrities alike.

The Hollywood Sign Trust, formed to maintain the cultural and historic landmark for future generations, has ensured that the 45-foot-tall letters have been refreshed for their starring role in advance of the sign’s centenary year.

You Can Do An Underwater-Aged Dom Perignon Champagne Tasting in the Maldives

As a thousand mile-long atoll in the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean, it’s no wonder that most of the Maldives’ most coveted experiences relate to the sea: over water villas, underwater resorts…and now, tastings of wine aged in what has been voted the world’s best underwater wine cellar and restaurant.

Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas has launched a new underwater-aged wine tasting experience. Taking place 20 feet below the Indian Ocean’s surface in the resort’s incredible SEA restaurant, surrounded by near 360-degree views of the local marine life, this exclusive and private tasting sees guests sample Dom Perignon champagne that has been aged submerged in open water for 365 days.

Situated in the Maldives’Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the resort’s underwater SEA restaurant takes diners beneath the waves to the very edge of Anantara Kihavah’s famed house reef, where the glass curved walls offer panoramic views of tropical marine life, including turtles, manta rays and clown fish.

In 2020, Anantara Kihavah’s wine experts started an experiment of submerging bottles of Dom Perignon 2008 vintage champagne below the ocean’s surface to age for a full year. After the sunken bottles were retrieved, the champagnes noticeably gained distinct flavour notes such as seaweed, minerals, and salinity in its taste, perfectly complementing the classic components of Dom Perignon’s citrus, brioche, and nutty characters.

Now every year, a limited number of premium bottles are submerged underwater at Kihavah’s house reef without enclosures and away from direct sunlight. This way, the wine ageing process is faster, with the vintage absorbing the sea minerals and salinity while corals form beautiful, organic shapes on the bottles over their time submerged.

To understand the ageing process of the sunken wines, resort sommeliers periodically conduct comparative tastings between an underwater-aged wine and a cellar-aged wine to evaluate the distinct changes in flavours and components.

In addition to Dom Perignon champagnes, resort wine experts keep diversifying the varieties by including a selected number of classic wines into the list. Wine lovers may be interested to know that today there are 22 sunken champagne and wines ageing in the reef, including underwater aged Dom Perignon Brut Millesime, Épernay, France 2012, Umbria IGT 'Cervaro della Sala' Chardonnay, Castello della Sala 2018 and Chassagne-Montrachet, Morgeot Les Fairendes VV, Francois Jouard 2014 975.

The wine cellar has over 450 bottles from two dozen countries and SEA’s underwater position enables its wine cellar to maintain cooler temperatures allowing each label to age gracefully.

During the exclusive wine tasting at the resort, oenophiles will sample underwater-aged Dom Perignon and compare its characteristics with a cellar-aged Dom Perignon champagne. All champagnes are paired with canapés and a selection of premium cheeses.

An overnight rail journey through the landscapes of the legendary Scottish Highlands on the Royal Scotsman, A Belmond Train, is getting even more baronial.

Two new Grand Suites will debut on the train in 2024 that mirror the atmosphere of a luxury Scottish country house and capture the magic of Highland culture and lifestyle.

When you’re not with fellow guests dining in one of the two wood-paneled dining cars and enjoying live evening entertainment, or off board excursions including wild swimming, foraging, water rafting, whisky tastings, and epic castle visits, you can be ensconced in your rolling luxury hotel suite with an ever-changing view during daytime travel.

The Grand Suites overflow with elegant references to Scottish culture and landscapes and honor the country’s timeless craftsmanship.

The statement armchair in the day lounge area is a tribute to the Orkney Chair – an iconic piece of furniture originating in the namesake Scottish archipelago over a century ago. Traditionally handmade with driftwood gathered from the shoreline and with no set design instructions, no chair is the same. For the Grand Suites, the Scottish design staple has been reinterpreted in a fresh, contemporary light, and upholstered with the finest textiles from iconic Scottish brand, Araminta Campbell.

The custom tartan design crafted by Araminta Campbell just for the Royal Scotsman covers both the armchair and sofa and includes references to the train. Three sets of double lines evoke rail tracks and depict the train’s three most legendary journeys - Scotland's Classic Splendours, Western Scenic Wonders and Taste of the Highlands - while its main check block will be made up of 37 threads, representing every year the train has been touring the Highlands.

3 New Attractions That Bring New Perspective to Hong Kong's British-Era History

While travel was paused during the pandemic, Hong Kong kept evolving. Three attractions give new and returning visitors fascinating insights into the city’s British era. Two reinvent an iconic Hong Kong experience, and the other provides visitors access to a part of Hong Kong that’s been closed to tourists – until now.

The Renewed Peak Tram

Hong Kong’s Peak Tram has been transporting people to the cool, greenery-covered heights of Victoria Peak since 1888. It’s one of the oldest funiculars in the world and is said to be the oldest in Asia.

Originally constructed with wooden cars to serve the British governor and other residents of the Peak, the tram takes riders on a spectacular, steep journey, one that has gotten only more extraordinary as Hong Kong has become a beacon of 20^th and 21^st century urban design.

Rising from about 100 feet to over 1300 feet above sea level, and at times ascending a nearly 30-degree grade, the tram glides past skyscrapers, leaving them below in a surreal trip that reveals at every moment new and unique views of Hong Kong’s ultra-modern cityscape, to Victoria Harbour and beyond.

The trip may be one of your most memorable - and certainly, most photo-worthy – few minutes in the city.

What’s New

The Peak Tram has been an integral part of Hong Kong for 130 years, but during the pandemic pause, it closed for extensive renovations and upgrades and emerged all-new in 2022.

Its hundred million-dollar renewal created new facilities, increased capacity to reduce wait times, and unveiled an all-new look.

The tram’s latest - 6^{th -}generation of cars (pictured, top) were made in Switzerland in a design that harkens back to mid-century carriages. They’re painted a retro color that’s being called “Peak Tram Green.” While not identical, a savvy traveler might be reminded of another renowned, bespoke, verdant hue in Hong Kong: “Peninsula Green.” That’s the custom paint color of a fleet of Rolls Royces that Hong Kong’s epic Peninsula Hotel has famously used for decades to ferry its guests around the city. Not coincidentally, the Peak Tram happens to be owned and operated by the same company that owns the legendary Peninsula Hotel.

More than a facelift and a new iconic color identity, though, the 6^th generation Peak Tram cars feature larger, panoramic windows that give passengers even more breathtaking views of the scenery beyond and below the tram.

In addition, each terminus, top and bottom, has been refurbished, incorporating unique experiences.

Don’t Miss

Once you arrive at the Peak, there are plenty of reasons to linger. The wok-shaped Peak Tower, observation decks, and dining and shopping experiences make the Peak itself a destination in Hong Kong.

In addition to the views, one of the original draws of the Peak for early residents, including the British governor, was the cool air its heights provided – especially in pre-air conditioning days. Today, you can still take advantage of the refreshing atmosphere at the Peak to enjoy incredible hikes and walks.

Newly-Opened to Visitors: Hong Kong’s Closed Frontier Town Sha Tau Kok

Hong Kong’s northernmost town is the last stop before mainland China. Sha Tau Kok was designated as part of a “Frontier Closed Area” in 1951, off-limits except to citizens with special permits.

Like other closed border zones in the world, Sha Tau Kok became a hotbed of illegal border crossing and smuggling, with its reputation only adding to its appeal for those of us intrigued by no-go zones.

What’s New

But beginning in phases in 2022, the area is being opened to visitors fascinated by its colorful frontier history. Tourists to Hong Kong are now able to join weekend tours and get access to this previously-closed area.

Chung Ying Street has formed the border between the Chinese and British territories since Hong Kong’s New Territories were leased to Britain in the 19^th century. One side of the street remains part of mainland China, the other, Hong Kong’s New Territories. Dubbed Chung Ying (“China England”) Street, shops grew up on both sides for cross-border shopping for residents with border permits, and reportedly smuggling while borders remained closed. Chung Ying Street continues to be one of the symbols of the era and remains a restricted zone, but visitors on tours may be able to get a glimpse of the legendary street on their tour.

At 1000 feet, Sha Tau Kok Pier is the longest pier in Hong Kong. It’s got a brand-new outdoor bazaar and social media-worthy murals.

Hong Kong’s Historic Central Market, Re-imagined for Modern Times

One of Hong Kong’s oldest fresh food markets also became one of the city’s architectural landmarks, and now, Central Market has a new lease on life for current residents and visitors.

While the market itself dates back to 1842, the first year of the British era of Hong Kong, it went through a number of physical transformations until its most recent. The 1939, Bauhaus-style Central Market became entrenched as a symbol of Hong Kong in the 20^th century, even as consumers adopted new shopping habits and new shopping venues, leading to the Central Market’s closure in 2003.

Luckily, that’s not the end of the story.

What’s New

Hong Kong’s Urban Renewal Authority undertook a vision for a future for the Central Market. During the pandemic, the re-imagined, revitalized and preserved historic Central Market building re-opened.

The original structure, with its historic red brick walls and the hanging clock of the building’s grand staircase, remains.

But rather than a market full of traditional fresh food stalls, visitors today will discover a modern cultural, shopping and community destination with next-generation architectural elements like a 400-plant, air filtering green arcade, and also experiences that reflect the Central Market building’s heritage and place in the city’s history. Many of today’s vendors even create and sell products using traditional ingredients in new ways or souvenirs that take visitors back decades.

13 original stalls remain, along with displays of traditional shop signs - along with an art installation of 500 mini red lampshades that were symbols of Hong Kong’s traditional fresh food markets.

Flying's Never Been so Fun: Check Out these First-Class 'Hotel Suites' in the Sky

Airlines are making it harder and harder to deny yourself the pleasure of first-class travel, especially on long-distance, overnight flights to Europe where you want to arrive feeling well-rested and refreshed.

No longer is the first-class cabin just about seats that are bigger, farther apart and lying flatter with food service on china rather than plastic - incrementally better than sitting farther back on the plane.

Two European airlines are launching fully-enclosed, private suites above the clouds catering to each passenger’s individual needs and tastes in the closest thing we’ve seen yet to a flying hotel suite.

Lufthansa’s “First Class Suite Plus”

Germany’s flagship carrier is overhauling its entire service in the next couple of years – with a first class cabin that’s set to revolutionize luxury travel.

In 2024, “First Class Suite Plus” debuts, offering private rooms in the sky to passengers.

Guests will find their suite has ceiling-high walls and an entirely closable door, large table, a suite wardrobe so you can have all your belongings on hand, neatly hanging and stowed, so you can change during your flight for comfort or dress to impress before you arrive at your destination.

Seats are a whole meter wide – that’s nearly 40 inches! Each guest can warm or cool their seat to their personal preferences, and of course, connect your own device to the suite’s entertainment system. The seats completely convert and are made up with linens into a comfortable bed for you rest whenever you wish.

There are even accommodations for those flying in pairs. Couples will be able to book a separate double cabin with and two wide seats that can be combined into a comfortable double bed.

In perhaps the ultimate luxury, you can spend your time in the air exactly as you wish. You choose when to enjoy entertainment, work, rest, change… and even dine. The crew serves your gourmet menu when you request it. And you can enjoy your meal at the large First Class table, similar to a restaurant.

Business Class guests also get their own suites with chest-high walls and sliding doors, a seat that converts into a six-and-a-half foot long bed, your own wardrobe and minibar, 4K screen, dining table, wireless charging, noise canceling headphones, and Bluetooth connectivity, private heating and cooling – all directly accessible from the aisle, of course.

Options in the Business Class cabins include the ability to connect two suites for couples flying together, or a double seat that can be converted into a two-person bed, an extra-long bed, extra space and work area, a seat with a baby bassinet, or simply an exclusive seat directly by the window.

‘SWISS Senses’

SWISS is also part of the Lufthansa Group of airlines, and it has also unveiled all-new cabins that will transform long-haul luxury air travel when they launch in 2025.

SWISS is debuting its first-ever suites in the sky in its First and part of its Business Class cabins.

Calling the new suites a “sensual experience,” they’ve been dubbed SWISS Senses.

The suites’ warm colors and muted tones such as claret, anthracite and beige, wood features and other top-quality materials and craftsmanship are comparable to a luxury European car, and convey comfort, calm, and luxe.

Guests enjoy complete privacy with closable sliding doors, a spacious personal wardrobe, a large seat table, individual seat heating and cooling, a wireless charging station and a screen display that is as wide as the suite itself. The cabin’s center suite can also be configured to suit two persons travelling together.

Even the washroom in the new SWISS First cabin is deluxe, inspired by the famous spring in Vals, Switzerland: a slate-black exterior, and a green interior that alludes to the spring’s fresh and cooling water.

In every class of cabin in SWISS’ new design, all passengers will benefit from new, ‘Human-Centric Lighting’ which helps alleviate jet lag and new state-of-the-art inflight entertainment systems that connect with your own device.

How These Hotels in Japan are Celebrating Cherry Blossom Season

Early spring in Japan spells ‘sakura,’ or cherry blossom season, when the entire country is awash in the lacy, pale pink blooms on millions of cherry trees lining rivers, avenues, mountainsides and park walks. A culture obsessed with seasonality values perhaps cherry blossom season the most, and this may be the best time to immerse yourself in Japanese traditions.

Sakura season has been celebrated for centuries in Japan, and the ancient ritual of 'hanami,' (literally meaning flower-viewing) parties and picnics still take place today – although with some modern twists that include portable karaoke machines. Organized by friends, schools, colleagues and communities to celebrate the breathtaking beauty of the delicate flower buds that bloom in clouds of pink all over the country, hanami parties take place under the delicate blossoms.

Delicate fruit tree blossoms are among the first blooms following winter, and traditionally heralded new life and new beginnings. The season was also symbolic of the ephemeral nature of life, as cherry blossoms bloom for only a short period before simply being blown away by the spring breezes.

Sakura season is a must-see natural and cultural phenomenon, and a number of hotels in Japan make it easy for visitors to the Land of the Rising Sun to feel part of the celebrations. Here are a few examples of hotels in the Marriott Bonvoy family of hotel chains making the most of this short and beloved season in major cities on Japan’s Honshu (main) island this year.

TOKYO

Guests staying at The Tokyo EDITION, Toranomon can explore picturesque Shiba Park, where about 200 sakura trees blossom every spring. During cherry blossom season this year, this boutique luxury hotel, with 206 rooms offering breathtaking glimpses of the Tokyo skyline, is presenting a Sakura Package featuring an exclusive, welcome cherry blossom sweet and an Aromatized Sakura Martini beautifully designed with sakura flowers, served at the hotel’s Lobby Bar.

The Westin Tokyo is located near the banks of the Meguro River, which flows through Tokyo and is lined by about 800 sakura trees. It is one of the best spots in Tokyo to view the sakura blossoms. Guests can dine on Sakura French Toast at The Lounge, or taste a Sakura and Cranberry Butter Sandwich at The Westin Deli, or head outdoors for a hanami picnic under the trees. Back in the hotel, sakura-inspired cocktail and mocktail selections await guests at The Bar and The Compass Rose.

YOKOHAMA

South of Tokyo in Yokohama, Sakura-dori or 'Cherry Blossom Avenue', about five to ten minutes' walk from The Westin Yokohama, is one of the city's most famous hanami spots with over a hundred sakura trees lining the street. The hotel is offering a seasonal Sakura Afternoon Tea as well as sakura-themed dinner courses at its signature Japanese restaurant, Kissui-sen. A Sakura Bento Box lunch is also available for guests who wish to explore the city and plan their own hanami picnics, in a perfect, private celebration of the season.

OSAKA

The entrance of W Osaka, Japan's first W hotel, is inspired by the beauty of the gorgeous sakura trees in Osaka, Japan. This spring, the hotel is presenting pink sakura-themed cocktails at Living Room, the social hub of the hotel, where guests can sip their curated cocktails with live DJs. MYDO, the hotel's signature teppanyaki restaurant is serving multi-course 'kappo' or table d'hôte menus showcasing the finest and freshest ingredients of springtime, accompanied by blush-pink rosé wines in honor of the delicate pink cherry blossoms.

The glamorous The St. Regis Osaka is one of the city's most iconic luxury hotels, and may also be one of the most romantic places to enjoy sakura season in Osaka. The hotel is offering a Japanese 'Hanafuda' themed cocktail using a variety of strawberries at renowned The St. Regis Bar. Guests can celebrate spring with seasonal specialties such as Sakura anpan red bean paste bread, an elegant Sakura sandwich, made with buttercream sandwiched between sablé cookies at La Boulangerie.

KYOTO

The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto sits on the banks of the picturesque Kamo River, one of the most beautiful places in the ancient Japanese capital, where guests can take a stroll and enjoy the sight of the trees in full bloom. To celebrate the arrival of spring, the hotel is presenting two seasonal cocktails, Thousand Gold with the delicate characters of lychee, apple and sakura leaves, and Sakura Across, with a profile of brandy, cocoa, caramel and spicy chai tea complementing the delicate flavors of sakura leaves and finished with tonic water.

The Wine Region You Can’t Miss on a Danube River Cruise in Hungary

King Louis XIV of France called it the ‘wine of kings, the king of wines,’ but remarkably, this Hungarian wine remains under the radar for many wine lovers today. For over a thousand years, Tokaj wines were served to royalty, and now, they are a treasure for modern travelers to Hungary to discover.

A perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in Hungary’s Tokaj wines may be before or after a Danube river cruise beginning or ending in Budapest. The wine region is a couple of hours east of Hungary’s capital, and makes a perfect oenophiles’ pre- or post-cruise extension of your cruise.

Tokaj is a town in the north-east part of the country, but the name represents the entire region of over two dozen villages, about 13,000 acres of vineyards, and hundreds of small wineries.

You mention the city of Bordeaux and everyone immediately thinks of its eponymous wines. But not nearly as many think ‘wine’ when they hear the name Tokaj.

Yet Tokaj claims to be the first defined wine region in the world, dating back to 1737 when a royal declaration listed 22 villages that were permitted to use the Tokaj name for their wines.

Tokaj wines owe their fame to a ‘friendly’ fungus, botrytis, highly valued for centuries by winemakers who call it ‘noble rot.’ Under the right climate and local weather conditions, it works away on wine grapes, shriveling them up. That concentrates the juice remaining, leaving a sweet-tart flavor and a new range of aromas including peach, honey and orange.

Grapes with ‘noble rot’ are the heart of Tokaj wines – the world’s first botrytized wines. Bordeaux’ Sauternes, for example, have not been around nearly as long as Tokaj.

Two white wine grapes native to Hungary account for nearly all the vines in Tokaj, and both furmint and Hárslevelű grapes have one very important quality: they attract the friendly botrytis fungus.

With uniquely local grapes that attract botrytis, a unique microclimate with humidity from two rivers that converge in the town of Tokaj providing ideal conditions to grow the fungus, long and dry autumns that allow the grapes to dry out and concentrate, and ancient volcanic minerals lending unique terrain and flavor to the grapes, Tokaj was blessed with perfect conditions to be a legendary wine region.

Winemakers kept refining their Tokaj wines, also carving a vast system of wine caves out of the rock and hillsides beginning in the 1400’s that offered the ideal temperature, humidity and growth of the mold highly valued by winemakers for ageing wine.

While Tokaj wine production waned behind the Iron Curtain, a 'Tokaj Revolution' followed the reopening of Eastern Europe three decades ago. Today, the ‘wine of kings, the king of wines’ has been restored to its full glory, with small winemakers still relying on the same local grapes, conditions, ancient caves and traditional methods to produce new vintages of the world’s oldest designated and botrytized wine.

More Than 150 New ‘Nazca Lines’ Discovered in Peru

This ancient wonder of the world just keeps getting better – and more mysterious. Researchers have recently discovered 168 more geoglyphs carved into the ground in the Nazca region of Peru, three hours south of Lima.

Like the 358 other Nazca lines already recorded to date, the new ones are believed to date back 2000 years.

Most of the designs etched into the arid ground are made up of straight lines, but amazingly, others depict people, local plants and wildlife including hummingbirds, monkeys, alpacas, lizards, spiders, cats, dogs, snakes… and incredibly in the desert landscape – even whales.

The largest Nazca lines are 400 yards long – that’s four football fields laid end to end!

And what’s more, they can only be seen from the air. Leading to centuries-old questions of how they were made – and for whom to see?

Researchers from historians, archaeologists, even mathematicians and amateur enthusiasts have worked to come up with explanations for the mystery of the Nazca lines.

Some scholars point to practical applications for at least some of the carvings, like following lines of irrigation, fields and natural aquifers.

Others believe the Nazca geoglyphs are spiritual, religious or fertility symbols. And some have pointed to an apparent connection with astronomy. They have tried to demonstrate how some lines converge on the horizon at the winter Solstice, or how some geoglyphs may have been used as markers to point to where the sun and other celestial bodies rose at key points of the year.

Those theories linked the Nazca lines in the imaginations of many mystery-lovers to other ancient monuments around the world, like Stonehenge and Easter Island. And similarly to other unexplained wonders of ancient civilizations, that in turn led to some fantastical theories that linger today.

As the world was gripped in the Space Race during the 1960’s, a theory that the Nazca lines were created by “ancient astronauts” took off. Who else could have constructed such immense patterns in the desert that were only visible from the air? Who else could the Nazca lines have been made for except aliens looking on – and visiting earth – from space?

Sadly for those who would like to believe in an alien connection to the Nazca lines, researchers have shown that they are well within the abilities of mere mortals on earth to construct, using simple tools and basic surveying equipment and knowledge. In fact, wooden stakes have even been found still in the ground at the end of some lines. And a folk mystery/ paranormal ‘investigator’ this century was able to reproduce some of the figures of the Nazca lines using the same tools and technology available to the Nazca people 2000 years ago.

Furthermore, some practical-minded people have pointed out that you don’t actually have to be in space – or even the air – to see the lines. Many can be viewed from nearby elevated areas.

But debunking the extraterrestials theory of how and why Peru’s Nazca lines came to be doesn’t diminish the wonder of their existence at all. Much remains to be learned about the lines and the people who toiled to create them millennia ago.

Advances in drone technology have made new Nazca line re-discoveries like the most recent recording of 168 previously unrecorded geoglyphs possible.

As development, deforestation and climate change bringing heavier rains and erosion to the arid environment that has preserved the lines for two millennia threaten the Nazca lines, new discoveries may help in the conservation of this UNESCO World Heritage Site for future generations of people to gaze and wonder at this mysterious evidence of a long-lost civilization in South America.

Together with Machu Picchu, the Nazca Lines make Peru a can’t-miss destination for those with a fascination for ancient cultures and the incredible mark and mystique they have left behind.

2024 marks the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings of Allied troops in France to liberate Europe from Nazi occupation. I've made a river cruise pilgrimage to Normandy and visited the American, British and Canadian D-Day Landing Beaches. It was not in an anniversary year, even, and walking on the actual beaches where history was made at such immense human cost was one of the most moving experiences I've ever had on my cruise travels.

In 2024, Viking will offer combination river cruise and land tours that take travelers to iconic locations in London, Normandy, and Paris associated with the Liberation of Europe, World War 2, and Operation Overlord.

From Holkam Bay, the waterway is bisected into Tracy Arm to the north and Endicott Arm to the south. It is hard to imagine that thousands of years ago these now-distant glaciers joined in Holkham Bay, more than thirty miles from their present locations. Extremely active, the glaciers calve frequently, filling their fjords with icebergs, some three stories in height.

Brown and black bears, wolves, deer, mountain goats, seals and many seabirds frequent this vast wilderness region. Designated as a wilderness area in 1980, Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness covers an area of 653,179 acres (264,000 hectares) -- and one fifth of its area is covered by ice.

Imagine experiencing the North/ South Sawyer Glacier or Endicott Arm by zodiac, or even closer to sea level and under your own steam by kayak.

First Ritz-Carlton Property in Italy Coming to Lake Como

There are over 100 Ritz-Carlton ultra-luxury hotels in 35 countries - but amazingly, none in Italy, one of luxury travel's top destinations. That's about to change. This elegant hotel brand is set to debut in one of Italy's most elegant locations.

Ritz-Carlton is re-imagining and restoration of one of Italy's most acclaimed destinations for luxury travelers: the former Hotel Grande Bretagne in Bellagio. Expected to open in 2026, the spectacular waterfront property features breathtaking views of Lake Como.

Lake Como is the jewel in the crown of the Italian Lake district, and a magnet for the global elite. The destination is an internationally recognized resort destination famed for its dramatic backdrops and charming towns and magnificent villas, which have acted as the setting for several blockbuster films including Casino Royale and Oceans Twelve.

Situated just outside the charming village of Bellagio, which sits on a promontory of land between the two arms of Lake Como, the historic Belle Époque Hotel Grande Bretagne was one of the destination's very first and most distinguished luxury hotels when it opened in 1850. The property fell into disuse at the end of the last century and has since been acquired by an Italian family with a vision and passion to restore the prestige and gracious hospitality of the former grand hotel.

In its transformation to a Ritz-Carlton property, the hotel is undergoing an extensive restoration and expansion project.

Spread over a 4 acre estate, the restoration project is the most significant hospitality development project in the Lake Como area in recent years and will involve a complete conservation and re-imagining of the property with respect for its historical significance.

When it opens, the restored luxury hotel is slated to offer 59 guestrooms and 46 suites, including two Ritz-Carlton suites. Plans include comprehensive resort facilities, including a destination spa complete with an indoor pool, casual and fine dining restaurants, and state-of-the-art meeting and event facilities.

Extensive parkland and gardens will reflect the typical landscaping of the country's Lombardy region and are expected to feature a meditation garden, historical walking trail, large outdoor swimming pool, and private boat dock to allow guests effortless access to other renowned destinations on the lake.

When it opens in just a few short years, the Ritz-Carlton, Bellagio will be strategically located within a fifteen-minute walk of the main tourist attractions in Bellagio such as Punta Spartivento, Villa Melzi and the gardens of Parco Villa Serbelloni. The destination is an hour and a half journey by car from Milan's Malpensa International Airport.

No wonder, when cruise lines serve up ever-more imaginative culinary programs every year to keep up with cruise travelers’ growing tastes. Gone are the days when a lobster tail served in the main dining room on formal night and a festive service of flaming Baked Alaska as a special goodbye dessert on the final evening of your sailing provide cruise diners with culinary awe to write home about – or post to social media.

More specialty restaurants, more celebrity and celebrated chef partnerships and branded-restaurants, interactive onboard culinary experiences and culinary demonstrations, more local flavors and hands-on local gastronomic, wine, spirits and food producer visits – the foodie fun of cruising just keeps growing.

Recently, one cruise industry survey of cruise food, beverage and hotel operations managers, as well as companies who provide the incredible amounts of culinary supplies needed to keep ship food and beverage programs literally afloat! – revealed some of the latest trends for the next year in three ‘priority sectors’ of cuisine at sea.

FOOD – More Sustainable Dining

You might predict that “Instagrammable” dining experiences top savvy cruise food professionals’ lists, but that was not the case.

• The top culinary priority was sourcing and serving local cuisine that reflects your cruise itinerary, with 61% of survey respondents identifying that cruise food trend;

• Over one-third of respondents named sourcing sustainable seafood (with per-person seafood consumption on board ships doubling since 1961!)

• One-quarter said providing cruise guests with meat substitutes was a priority; and

• 22% said they were trying to get closer to zero-waste food preparation and food service.

DRINKS – More nutrition, Less tipsy

Tippling tastes are changing, and cruise companies and their providers are staying on top of trends.

• Half of respondents cited offering low- to no- alcohol beverages in ship’s bars, lounges and dining rooms;

• 37% said sourcing and providing craft spirits was important;

• And the same number said providing health supplement drinks was an increasingly important trend meet their ships’ guests’ tastes and lifestyles.

TECH – Convenience is king

While unparalleled service remains a touchstone of the cruise lifestyle, guests are increasingly looking to cruise lines for the conveniences provided by technology in their food and drink experiences onboard. We are seeing that larger ships have been relying on technology more to increase convenience, reduce lineups and speed up service, while small and luxury ships continue to keep staff-to-guest ratios high and favor the personal touch of human servers.

Still, it’s worth noting that:

• Nearly two-thirds of cruise food and beverage pros said they see the need for more ordering and menu apps; and

• Over one-third saw a continuing need for contactless ordering capabilities.

Telchac: An hour away from the capital city Merida lies the peace and quiet of the port of Telchac. Its calm waters are perfect for swimming in complete tranquility. Here, you can also visit the Museum of the Sea, which exhibits species of marine fossils, snails, shells and more.

Xtampu & X'Cambo: Not far from Telchac is the beautiful Rosada Lagoon, with its unforgettable vivid pink color. It comprises part of Xtampu’s lagoon, where — in addition to taking spectacular photos — you can learn about the process of salt extraction. While in the area, you can also immerse yourself in ancient Mayan culture by visiting the archaeological zone of X'Cambo, one of the few ruins close to the coast, which is believed to have been an ancient fishing port that supplied the main Mayan cities with food.

Cancunito: Located in Río Lagartos — a three hours drive from the capital and very close to Las Coloradas, famous for its large pink pools — Cancunito stands out as one of Yucatan’s most spectacular virgin beaches. With its fantastic natural setting, this tropical paradise has abundant mangroves as well as coastal dunes. It's part of an ecosystem where species such as Hawksbill, White, and Loggerhead sea turtles arrive to spawn.

San Felipe: Half an hour away from Cancunito lies the small fishing and tourist port of San Felipe, where you’ll find rustic wooden houses in a mix of cheerful colors. Enjoy a day at the town beach with its white sands, turquoise waters and tranquility are a relaxing escape. San Felipe has become one of the most popular spots in Yucatán for nature lovers who come for its vibrant natural surroundings.

Social Media Safety Tips for Spring Break and Beyond

Spring Break is high season for family travel, and with every member of the family more digitally connected than ever at home and away, that means posting about good times on vacation. Not so fast, warns one insurance company, which is advising travelers of the risks of ‘over-sharing.’

A new survey commissioned by the Allstate insurance company revealed that almost one-third of social media users post content about their vacation plans online. That’s before AND during, not just afterwards, and that’s the trouble.

According to the insurance provider, “sharing that you’re away could expose your home to a break-in.” It points out that announcing in a public place for friends – and the not-so-friendly – to see that your home is empty, exposes you to risk.

In addition, people who, in an excess of enthusiasm, post photos of tickets and even passports, may end up providing unsavory characters with enough information for identity theft.

That’s the last kind of souvenir you want of your holiday!

I know – you would never post something unwise on social media. The survey shows that the proportion who post before or during their travels is highest among those 18-34 years of age, at 46%. But those with children still rank above the average one-third at 36%, and among those going away for Spring Break, 45% admit they plan on posting to social media before and during their trips.

So – on Spring Break vacations and anytime you take a trip, think before you post. And here are some social media safety tips:

Hold off on posting that selfie until you return from your vacation. This includes sharing details on social media before and during your trip. Your friends and family will be just as envious of your trip if you post pics after you return home.
Check the privacy and security settings of your social media accounts, and review who has access to your personal information. Even if you have set rigid privacy settings for your social media accounts, it's still possible for others to view what you post through the accounts of friends and followers.
Review pictures you’ve previously posted on your profiles and remove any information someone might use to find your home address. Look carefully! Sometimes that information isn’t written on a document, but can be found in the background of photos.
And avoid posting photos with geotagging as it can reveal your location in real time; turn off geolocation data on your phone.
Review social media posting ground rules with young people traveling with you.

One more thought: if you’re vacationing right, you’re having the time of your life. Why waste any of those precious moments on social media?
